Why choose Acharya Mentoring?...

Molly, BSc student

I was feeling really nervous and I was never easily able to access help with solving my problems prior to mentoring. I found the mentoring sessions extremely helpful. I gained better time management skills, something I struggled a lot with before mentoring. I also learned how to navigate difficult social situations better, (such as conflicts in group work.) and I also found it easier to talk about what happened during my week in a structured and linear way. After having mentoring, my work schedule timetables became a lot more organised, as well as accounting for extra time in case I wasn’t able to meet my personal deadlines: this was a huge help as I found myself struggling to reach the goals I set myself without any contingency.

My mentor is always readily available to provide support when needed. I feel that she benefits me greatly.

Prior to mentoring, I struggled to organise my time and found my university workload extremely overwhelming. I suffer with mental health problems, ADHD and a thyroid condition which can make getting out of bed, organising my time and focussing on work difficult.

What stood out while receiving mentoring from Beth were her organisational skills, listening skills and compassion. I never felt judged for struggling and she was always willing to work with me to tackle any challenge I brought to her.

Bethany was very calm and organised. She had clearly read my file and was aware of the aspects of the work I found difficult. She was able to help me to achieve my best whilst being considerate. I felt listened to and supported: I no longer had to face what felt like a mountain of work on my own.

Before mentoring,  I found myself stuck between a pillar and a hard place. I hadn't a clue how to manage stress levels and also forgot how to manage the simplest of tasks. I didn't feel as though I could talk to anyone about these challenges as it made me feel vulnerable, which I felt was an incredible weakness.

Since starting mentoring, I have seen a massive improvement with my wellbeing. I can do a lot more than I used to be able to do, in relation to my confidence and self-esteem. I have learnt so much in a year and a half, including how to control my stressors. I have completed so many interesting tasks that have enabled me to find out more about myself. My confidence has improved considerably. I now find myself going out of my comfort zone, which is massive for me. Before the mentoring began, I was incredibly sceptical of how this was going to benefit me, but now, I have grown and developed as an individual in ways that I didn't think possible.

Prior to mentoring, I found myself feeling lost especially when it came to my university work. My wellbeing was suffering and therefore, I was struggling with my work. Although, I felt like I was trying my hardest, I always felt like I could do better. I became stuck in a vicious cycle of being very guilty when not doing my work and this meant I would compensate by overworking and pushing myself to breaking point.

Throughout my journey with Beth, I have been able to become much more self-aware. I can now reflect on the way I am feeling and how this may affect my work. Beth has taught me so many tips and tricks that has helped me enhance my university work. I can also apply these to my personal life! I have learnt to break down tasks to become simpler and this definitely helps when it comes to my wellbeing. My main area of concern was my confidence and I feel that this has significantly improved. When carrying out presentations at university, this has reflected well on my final grades. The support and patience provided throughout my mentoring experience was priceless.

Prior to mentoring, I was in a pretty awful place both mentally and physically.  I had been struggling with agoraphobia, anxiety, and depression and was overweight.  I struggled to have any purpose and direction so that is why I decided the time was right to apply to university.  I had very low self-esteem at the start of my studies and suffered from imposter syndrome. From the very first session, I was impressed with how much knowledge and experience Beth had and we immediately discussed a plan of action.  The initial small steps at first helped me gain confidence and believe that I deserved to be at University and that I could also thrive.  Beth has helped me to be more objective when it comes to feedback and constructive criticism which is something I had always had issues with previously.  As the second semester started I felt a change in myself, I was standing taller and also found myself engaging in academic conversations.  By the end of year 1, I had surpassed my expectations and was amazed at the journey I had been on and the achievements I had made.

My confidence has grown so much, I believe in my abilities much more than I ever have and I now have real goals for my future. This has also had an effect on my personal life as I am more sociable and confident around others.

I am also much happier which I think is due to having purpose and a reason to work hard.  I believe in myself and I like what I see when I look in the mirror.
